Set Wizard Users Manual (1.7)

Set Wizard helps you creating setlists for your gigs. Consider this; You are a member of one or several bands. Each band have a number of songs they use to play, i.e. the repertoire. Ever so often itīs your task to put together a number of these songs for a particular gig. The gig can contain one or several sets. In the end you want the setlist on a piece of paper (normally one copy for each band-member) to bring with you on stage.

Set Wizard will give you a hand with this otherwise tedious process, and it will be fun too! The application consists of a number of views where the different tasks are performed. This manual guides you through the most important views; The Main View, The Band View, The Repertoire View, The Gig View, The Set View, the Song select View and the Performance View. If you are familiar with the iPhone interface you will have no problems with navigating through Set Wizard.

In addition there are own information views connected to these views. The information views present view parameters and allows editing of these. The information views are reached through the information button on each views toolbar (bottom right).

Main View

This is where it all starts when opening Set Wizard for the first time. Set Wizard comes with a band already set up, The Testband, which will help you to quickly see what is going on. The Testband is set up with a repertoire and a gig with a couple of sets. Create a new band by clicking the Edit button followed by the plus sign in the navigation bar. The default name of the new band is New Band. Give it a proper name and add a description if you like. Leave edit mode by clicking Done in the navigation bar. You can now enter the Band View by clicking on the bands name.

By clicking the information button at the tool bar, you will be able to edit global parameters like date, lyrics search url, font and print format. You will also be able to reach the users manual (this manual) in addition to the Set Wizard internet site and support e-mailaddress.

The lyrics search url is be default set to azlyrics.com. The actual syntax of the search url will vary from site to site, but the artist and songtitle are provided as parameters for all urlīs.

Band View

From this view you can go two ways, either create new gigs or enter the Repertoire View. Enter the Repertoire View by selecting the Repertoire table cell at the top of the View.

Add a new gig by clicking the Edit button followed by the plus sign in the navigation bar. Edit the venue, description, category and date in addition to adding a band picture, from camera or the photo library. Leave edit mode by clicking Done in the navigation bar and enter the Gig View by clicking on the gig.

Export/import data

From the Band View you can export the bands database in the form of an xml-file as an e-mail attachment. This file contains all band data, including repertoire and gigs. You can easily import the file into Set Wizard. This is done by selecting the e-mail attachment, clicking the action button and selecting Open in Set Wizard. This way you can share band data with your band members. Note that existing repertoire songs and gigs will not be overwritten by this import. New songs and gigs will merge with your existing ones. The export also serves as a backup of your band database and is recommended after each gig and before software upgrades.

Repertoire View

This is where you add new songs to the bands repertoire or edit already existing songs. The first time you enter this view it will be empty. You can either add songs manually one by one by clicking Edit followed by the plus in the navigation bar, or import songs from the Music Library by clicking the action button on the toolbar. If you do this you will enter the Media Picker where you can select songs by band, artist, playlist and so forth. Parameters imported are song name, artist, length, genre and bpm (the last not normally set in the Music Library).

You can also start and pause playback of a song from this view. If you click on a song, Set Wizard will check if the song is present in the Music Library (case sensitive search based on song name and artist). If found, playback of the song will start, and a new button, Now Playing, will appear on the toolbar. Pressing this button will take you to the Now Playing View.

You edit existing songs by clicking on the arrow button on the right of the song. The parameters you can edit are name, artist, key, bpm, length, genre, lead vocal, lyrics url, notes and place in set. You can also choose if the song is currently active or not, i.e. if it will be available for selection when making setlists. The Notes filed is a free text field which is meant for detailed information such as lyrics and/or chords or other notes regarding the song. From the lyrics search view it is possible to select a text area and copy it directly to the Notes field. Once a text area is selected, the option Copy to Notes will appear at the toolbar. Selecting this option will append the selected text to the Notes field.

Gig View

You will then be taken back to the Band View and see the gig-copy at the top of the list of gigs. You can then select the copied gig and edit it the way you like.

From the Gig View you can export the gig database in the form of an xml-file as an e-mail attachment. This file contains all gig data. You can easily import the file into Set Wizard. Here you can choose between sending the setlist as plain text in an e-mail or to create a PDF document and send it as an attachment. You can also preview the PDF and print it directly from the iPhone if you have an iPhone supporting printer available (Airprint) or some other application available  which enables printing directly from the iPhone. You can decide which of the song parameters (key, bpm, lead vocalist, length) you would like to have present on the setlist in addition to deciding fontsize and whether the list should be printed with bold type. You can also send the setlist as an SMS message.

You can also lock the Gig to avoid it from beng deleted and to preserve the sets from being altered or removed. A locked Gig will show with a padlock in the user interface.

Song placement in set

The songs placement parameter can be used to indicate where in the set the song typically should be put. You can choose between Start, Middle or End. If placement is activated (in gig parameters), you will be notified by a color code in the Set View if the song is placed outside of its intended place. The relative size of the start, middle and end can be easily adjusted in the gig parameters. Red color indicates that a song is placed more than one area away from itīs intended area, e.g. a start song is placed at the end. Orange means that it is placed one area away, e.g. a middle song is placed at the start or end.

Set View

From the Set View you compose the actual set, i.e. you choose which songs to play, decide in which order they should appear, move songs between sets etc. You can also start and pause playback of a song from this view or open the Performance View.

To add one or more songs to a set you click on the Edit button followed by the plus sign in the navigation bar. You then enter the Song Select View where the actual song selection takes place.

When the songs are selected, the actual number of minutes are calculated in the table section header as well as the number of songs. The calculation is based on the current songs in the set plus the assumed break between songs (one of the set parameters).  You will also see the planned length of the set presented, e.g. 39/45, which means that 39 of 45 minutes are filled. To change the order of the songs, enter Edit mode by clicking the Edit button in the navigation bar. Then drag and drop songs to the desired location by selecting the song at the right of the song. When the song is dropped at the right location the songs will automatically be renumbered. You can also drag songs across sets. Delete a song from the set by clicking on the red Delete button control followed by Delete.

By clicking on the right arrow of a song you will be taken to the Performance View which shows the songs notes field. You can also edit the notes field from here.

If you click on a song, Set Wizard will check if the song is present in the iPod library (case sensitive search based on song name and artist). If found, playback of the song will start, and a new button, Now Playing, will appear on the toolbar. Pressing this button will take you to the Now Playing View.

Song Select View

In this view you do the actual selection of songs for the current set. Songs already selected will either be marked as selected or greyed out if previously selected either in this set or another set in this gig. You can still select the song.

Performance View

This view presents the notes field and is accessed from the Set View. If the song has a BPM set different from 0, it will count in by blinking the display until you select scrollmode (automatic or manual). If automatic scrolling is selected, an algorithm will scroll based on length of text and songlength. You can also choose song settings from this view. The font is set in the global settings.

Now Playing View

From this view you can control the playback of a song. It gives you the possibility to set loop-points to repeat certain parts of the song as well as fast forward and rewind. Loop Start and Loop End can be set either by adjusting the graphical buttons or by clicking LS and LE in the toolbar. You will also see the notes field and be able to edit it from this view.

In the middle of the toolbar you will find a button with the current BPM setting for the song. By clicking on the button you will be presented with an area where you can tap the song tempo along with playback of the song. When you start tapping the text will be red. Tap until the color of the text is green. The song tempo will be saved with the song when clicking on the save button in the navigation bar.
